The Advanced Driving Course

Our Advanced Driver course will give you additional on-road knowledge and skills, above and beyond what is taught when you learn to drive.

IAM RoadSmart Will send you a handbook to help you keep track of your progress, and you’ll have time to practise and hone your new skills between each session.

What happens next?

Stage 1 - Assign to a National Observer

Once Cardiff IAM as recieved your information from IAM RoadSmart, you will be paired with one of our National Observers who will contact you and arrange to meet you in a location that is convenient for you both. You can discuss where you’d like to meet your Observer once you have been assigned. You will drive in your own vehicle.

Stage 2 - Meet your National Observer

When you meet your assigned National Observer for the first time, they will explain about the course in more details. Our Observer will then ask you to sign a documents declaration form to confirm that you own a driving licence, your car is fully insured and has got a MOT (if applicable).

Stage 3 - Observe Runs

Over a series of observed drives, you’ll work together on developing your on-road skills. You’ll learn how to continually apply the IPSGA framework to a variety of on-road situations including on bends, motorways, and during overtakes etc.

Stage 4 - Mock Test

When your Observe thinks you are test ready, you will undertake a mock test with a different National Observer with your Observer sitting in the back of your car. If both observers agree that you are test ready, then your observer will contact our Associate Coordinator who will arrange your test.

Stage 5 - The Test

Once you have been set as test ready, you will be contacted by one of our examiners by email or by phone to arrange a mutually convenient date, time and location to meet for your test to take place. The test should be about 75 minutes from start to finish with no more than 60 minutes driving.

At the end of your test, your examiner will tell you your result straight away.

If you are successful, you will become a full member of IAM RoadSmart and you will be able to develop the skill that you have learned further, by becoming a National Observer etc. Speak to your observer for more information or check out IAM RoadSmart website.

If you were unsuccessful, your examiner will explain to you what areas you need to develop on to be successful.

Stage 6 - More Development Needed

After your test, contact your observer who will arrange with you to set up more observe runs, to allow you to develop your skills more until your observer is happy that you are ready to take your test again.

Once you are ready to take your test again, contact IAM RoadSmart or click onto the link below to book your test (payment required). Step 5 is then repeated.
